Airbus DS Government Solutions and Comtech Successfully Demonstrate High-Data-Rate Troposcatter Communications with Ranger Terminal and Multipath Radio

Airbus DS Government Solutions, Inc., in collaboration with Comtech, today announced the successful completion of a rigorous Troposcatter ("Tropo") communications test, integrating the versatile Ranger Flyaway Terminals 1.2m flyaway terminal with Comtech's advanced Multipath Radio (MPR). The test demonstrated the combination's ability to establish a resilient, high-data-rate, Beyond-Line-of-Sight (BLOS) link, providing a critical communications capability for contested or satellite-denied environments. The demonstration, which took place in Orlando, Florida on September 9, 2025, highlights a significant advancement in expeditionary communications. By leveraging the Ranger terminal's portability and rapid deployment features with the MPR's sophisticated multipath mitigation technology, operators can now achieve reliable, long-distance connectivity without relying on satellite infrastructure. This capability is essential for military forces, disaster response teams, and other organizations requiring robust communications in austere or compromised environments. During the test, the integrated system established a stable 50-mile link. Utilizing the Ranger Flyaway Terminals 1.2m antenna and the MPR, the team maintained a data rate between 45-50 Mbps for 51 consecutive minutes. The link's integrity was exceptional, with only six bit errors recorded over the entire duration—a testament to the effectiveness of the system's Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM), which automatically adjusted to optimize the connection. "This successful test validates the Ranger's adaptability and reinforces our commitment to providing flexible, multi-mission communication solutions," said Cory Cantrall, Director of Product Solutions at Airbus DS Government Solutions. "Integrating our combat-proven Ranger terminal with Comtech's powerful Multipath Radio creates a formidable BLOS solution. It gives our customers a vital alternative to satellite communications, ensuring they can transmit critical data and maintain situational awareness, no matter the operational challenges." The synergy between the two platforms was a key factor in the test's success. The Ranger Flyaway Terminals, known for its modular, lightweight design and tool-free setup, was easily configured for Tropo operation. The Comtech MPR, with its low Size, Weight, and Power (SWAP) profile, was mounted directly onto the antenna, minimizing the system's logistical footprint and complexity. This combined solution provides a truly expeditionary package for high-capacity, over-the-horizon communications.
